Gambia’s female Afro-Manding artist takes the stage at AfriCourage
One of Gambia’s best-known female Afro-Manding artists Sambou Suso is set to appear at the AfriCourage festival on December 28th in Bakau. Speaking to the AfriCourage team at Capital 100.4 FM in November 2019, Sambou Suso expressed her delight in being part of the festival.
Sambou Suso: Never give up
She expects that the impact of the AfriCourage festival will be huge as it will be presented as part of the OpenMic festival and that she is convinced that artists will strive to do their best. She is honoured and excited to have the opportunity to perform in the festival because it provides her with a platform for her music.
We Need Women in The Gambian Music Industry
In 2016, Suso was voted Representative of Female Musicians for The Musicians Union of The Gambia (MUSIGAM). In her opinion, “the Gambian music industry is dull, which is why most women are not involved into music. To succeed in this industry one has to be committed, determined, to work hard and never give up”.
Noting that she is always excited to represent The Gambia, she admits there are challenges in the industry but, since she signed with Joluv Arts, she has been satisfied with her career development. She urges young artists to be focused and determined, and to strive to understand their culture.
Orchestral Accompaniment
Sambou Suso will perform on December 28th as the special guest of the Liberation Orchestra of Inverted Traditions, an ensemble drawn from the ranks of the visiting artists and including musicians from Baaba Maal, Journal Rappé, Tatadindin Jobarteh and the Ensemble Modern.
